Derek Fraser had a long career with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He is a former ambassador to Ukraine, Greece, and Hungary. He also served in Vietnam, Germany, Soviet Union, and Belgium; In Ottawa he was, among other things, acting Director-General, Cultural Affairs and Higher Education; Director of the USSR and Eastern Europe Division, and Director of the Second West European Division. He also served as an analyst in the Federal-Provincial Relations Office of the Privy Council Office.
