About EUCAnet

The Europe Canada Network

EUCAnet (Europe Canada Network) is a hub for experts primarily located in Canada that work on European and Canadian current issues from a transatlantic perspective. These experts offer commentary and expertise and are available for media interviews and public talks. We are a public outreach platform – that makes scholarly knowledge available and meaningful to the public in times when the need for evidence based knowledge and public debate is crucial. Our goal is to foster the Canada Europe Transatlantic Dialogue with the aim of supporting the process of informing public policy making.

EUCAnet started in 2004 as a joint initiative of ECSA-C (European Community Studies Association – Canada) and the European Studies Program at the University of Victoria. The project was initially financed by a grant from the European Commission (DG RELEX). During the years 2008-2017 EUCAnet was part of the Strategic Knowledge Cluster Canada-Europe Transatlantic Dialogue, co-financed by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the University of Victoria.

Since 2016 EUCAnet is operated with the support of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Program of the European Union, the Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) at the University of Victoria (UVic) and the European Studies Community Association in Canada (ECSA-C). The  Jean Monnet projects CEDoM, CEDoD, Media Strategies MSEUCA and ECSA-Cn (see in past projects) brought  together multi-disciplinary expert groups in various fields of European Studies: CEDoM concentrates on borders and migration; CEDpD on issues of democracy and populism, MSEUCA targeted new outreach strategies for scholars working in various fields on Canada-Europe Dialogue; and ECSA-Cn promoted the outreach efforts of the European Community Studies Association in Canada.

The new focus of EUCAnet on Memory Politics and Democracy allows us to promote exchanges on current issues between Canada and the EU in scholarly and broader public debates. A series of knowledge dissemination initiatives targets public policy stakeholders and civil society organizations with the aim of expanding knowledge of European integration through a multiplicity of lenses.
