Adrian, Melanie

Dr. Melanie Adrian is an Associate Professor at the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. Her work critically examines the tensions which arise when a general religious right is applied in a specific context and what this application signifies for national identity and cultural norms. Her book, Religious Freedom at Risk: The EU, French Schools, and Why the Veil was Banned (Springer, 2016), takes up these issues in France and the wider European context.

 

Research interests: Religious rights of minorities in Europe and the Americas; Identity and self-expression among Muslim minority communities in Europe and the Americas; Intersections of multiculturalism, nationalism, religion and the law; Social Theory; Human Rights Law
