Oliver Schmidtke: EUCAnet Leader

Oliver Schmidtke is the European Studies Scholar at the University of Victoria and holds the Jean Monnet Chair in European Studies. He is the former Director of the European Studies Program (2005-2008) and President of the ECSA-C (European Community Studies Association-Canada – 2004-2006). Dr. Schmidtke received his Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence.
After teaching at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany he was J.F. Kennedy fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. From 1999-2002 he was the DAAD lecturer in European and German Studies. His research interests are in the field of European politics and history and Comparative Politics focusing on identity and ethnicity in modern Europe.

Derek Fraser served as Ambassador at the Canadian Embassy in Ukraine from 1998 to 2001, in Greece from 1995 to 1998, and in Hungary from 1988 to 1993. He has also worked at Canadian missions in Vietnam, Germany, Russia and Belgium. At headquarters, he was variously Acting Director General, Cultural Affairs and Higher Education Bureau, Director at different times of the East and West European Divisions, and Deputy Director of Latin American Division.
Mr. Fraser also acted as a legal adviser, and analyst in many other capacities after joining the Department of External Affairs in 1963. In addition, after the election of the Parti Quebecois in 1976, he was temporarily assigned to the Federal-Provincial Relations Bureau of the Privy Council Office to work on the implications of the victory for Canadian federalism.

Joan DeBardeleben is the Director of the Strategic Knowledge Cluster Canada-Europe Transatlantic Dialogue: Seeking transnational solutions to 21st century problems. She is the Director of the Centre for European Studies and Co-Director of the East-West Project, which houses research on Russian social, economic, and political developments. Dr. DeBardeleben received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of several books and articles dealing with Russian politics, public opinion, elections, and labour relations and privatization. She also maintains a research interest in environmental issues and policies in the post-communist world.
Her current work relates to public opinion, democratization, and federalism in Russia, as well as EU-Russian relations. In recent years she has also turned her attention to the European Union and its relations with its eastern neighbours.
Beate Schmidtke: EUCAnet Development and Management

Beate Schmidtke is the project manager for the EUCAnet.ca project since 2004. She brings to the EUCAnet project experience of several projects that she managed with the funds of the European Commission (yearly up to 1.5 million Euros). Beate has a Diploma in Cultural Science from the University Hildesheim and MA in International Cultural Affairs from the Robert Bosch Foundation in Germany. From 1996-2001 she worked with the International Media and Book Agency in Berlin focusing on the implementation of the New Media in the field of culture and education in close collaboration with the Council of Europe and European wide networks (Germany, Italy, Poland, Netherlands) especially in the field of higher education and the book industry.
In 2002 she started working for the University of Victoria at the European Studies Program as a conference organizer. In 2004 she was responsible for the development and management of the EUCAnet project. In 2006 and 2007 she developed and managed the European Commission projects for the Young Researchers Network in Canada. Since 2008 she is also responsible for the management of the GermanStudies.ca network project.

Timothy Scolnick completed the Bachelors degree in 2008 from the University of Victoria (UVic). Currently, he is an M.A. student at UVic studying the development of Chinese foreign policy relating to climate change and the influence Europe is having upon it. Pertaining to Europe, he is very interested in many issue areas including enlargement, immigration, integration and most importantly policies relating to environmental protection, security and climate change.

Marta Giménez (LL.M. Candidate, University of Victoria, Canada, LL.B., University of Barcelona, Spain, 2003) is a member of the interdisciplinary program "Law and Society" at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. She is currently undertaking research for her thesis project on environmental regulation and policy. Her thesis tackles European Union (EU) legislation and policy-making, with a focus on water management. Her topic is the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive in France and Spain (Directive 2000/60/EC). She is interested in the fields of EU law and policy, EU environmental law and policy (in particular, water policy), policy implementation, institutionalism, and governance.

Steffen Neumann is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Cultural, Social, and Political Thought (CSPT) and the Department of Political Science at UVic. Before he came to Victoria, Steffen was a doctoral student at the Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany), where he also completed his Masters and Bachelors degrees in Sociology and Political Science.
His doctoral thesis focuses particularly on theories of recognition (e.g. Ch.Taylor, A. Honneth, N. Fraser, I.M. Young) and their respective contributions towards a more comprehensive theoretical account of recognition and redistribution. Steffen is also interested in contemporary social thought, multiculturalism/identity politics, and migration research.
